— Another blistering start for Shenendehowa, and another victory for the surging Plainsmen.

“I saw them play last night, and they shot the lights out,” Columbia coach Jim Obermayer said after Shenendehowa’s 73-57 Suburban Council win Tuesday night over the Blue Devils. “I was hoping they wouldn’t do it again, and they did it again.

“And they weren’t just making shots. They were hitting nothing but net.”

Shenendehowa made nine of 12 shots in the first quarter to build a double-digit lead, and the balanced Plainsman maintained it throughout to post their second victory in as many nights and fourth in a row since losing to North Division rival Saratoga Springs.

Doug Milvaney and Matt Miner scored 14 points apiece for Shenendehowa (4-1 league, 8-1 overall), 6-foot-6 senior Ryan Murphy turned in his finest effort of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while three other Plainsmen clicked for nine points.

“That’s a team effort when something like that happens,” Murphy said of Shenendehowa’s 23-12 first-quarter burst in which six players scored. “That’s guys finding open guys, and guys hitting shots.”

Shenendehowa made a slew of shots in the lane and beyond the three-point arc, with Matt Lee and Dan Lee both knocking down a trio of threes, and Jake LaPan and Tony Hughes each adding one. Matt Lee nailed a pair of threes and Dan Lee dropped in another in a 13-3 spurt to open the contest.

Shenendehowa connected on 10 three-point baskets in Monday’s 60-34 win at Shaker, Matt Lee leading the way four four of them.

“That’s what we are. There’s no secret there. We can stroke it from the outside, and we’re going to take it,” said Shenendehowa coach Tony Dzikas. “When we have Doug doing his thing in the lane and Murphy hard working in the post, that opens things up for us out there.”

“In the beginning of the year, we knew we had a lot of potential and a lot of parts,” Milvaney said. “Now, they’re all starting to fall into place.”

Milvaney converted a three-point play in the final second of the first quarter before Shenendehowa began the second period with a 12-5 run. Dan Lee sank a pair of three-point baskets and Murphy scored on a hook shot to cap the run, giving the hosts a 35-17 advantage with four minutes left.

“Tonight we got Murphy going in the paint,” Dzikas said after the senior equaled his season high for points. “His New Year’s resolution is to finish those bunnies. He really looked good tonight.”

Murphy scored on two putbacks and a layup in a 25-13 third-quarter charge, while Miner generated nine points and Milvaney seven. Miner hit two free throws, converted a three-point play and sank a jump shot in a 9-0 run late on the quarter as Shenendehowa’s lead grew to 62-35.

“We don’t even worry about the score. We look at every quarter as if it’s 0-0,” said Milvaney, a senior forward who totaled six rebounds, four assists and three steals. “We just want to go out there are keep it going.”

Columbia (2-3, 6-3) got 15 points from Steve King and 14 out of Ansu Diggs, while Jacob Douty and Shane Reed both added eight. Reed scored on a drive and putback in a 9-2 run to end the first half as Columbia drew within 37-26, and the senior forward’s layup made it 39-28 in the third period before Shenendehowa put together a 14-4 run which featured a three-point play by Milvaney and a three-point bomb from Matt Lee.

“Nothing came easy for us tonight,” said Obermayer, whose Blue Devils had won three straight games and six of seven before Tuesday’s matchup between division contenders. “We dug that hole early on, and it was an uphill climb all night. We couldn’t get into anything.”

Shenendehowa, on the other hand, was smooth and efficient.

Dzikas was particularly pleased with his team’s ball movement which led all those open shots and another big lead. In Monday’s game, Shenendehowa went up after one quarter, 22-11, and led at the half, 35-19.

“We have a few basic concepts that we teach, but what makes this group unique and effective is that we have a lot of good ball handlers,” Dzikas said. “We can penetrate and kick it to the open man, which makes us tough to defend.”
