The Spartans of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Queensbury are used to beating up on each other in Class A.

On Saturday, they beat the top two Class AA teams in the state, at separate meets.

Burnt Hills knocked off Fayetteville-Manlius (No. 2) at the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester, and Queensbury, the three-time defending Class A state champ, beat Arlington (No. 1) by one point at the Queensbury Invitational, despite the fact that Arlington runners took the top three places in the race.

The Burnt Hills Spartans were led by sophomore Otis Ubriaco in fourth (15:09), but coach Chip Button gave special credit to senior Anthony Romeo, who picked it up to get 43rd overall and score as Burnt Hills’ fifth finisher, eight spots behind F-M’s fifth man, Mark McGurrin.

“We ran one of the best races we’ve ever run [in program history],” Button said. “The guys just ran tremendous.”

McQuaid has been a traditional early-season stop for Burnt Hills for years, but the Spartans usually run in the second varsity race for schools of medium size.

On Saturday, BH was placed in the AAA race for the first time since 1994.

“The way we ran early in the season, I thought we would be competitive,” Button said.

Alex Hatz of F-M won the race in 14:57 for three miles, and the Hornets’ Paul Merriman was 10 seconds behind Ubriaco in sixth.

The Spartans got three more in before another F-M runner finished, Scott Maughan (ninth, 15:24), Kent Harlow (12th, 15:34) and Sean Pezzulo (14th, 15:39).

“They’re [Harlow and Pezzulo] two guys who have really run well for us,” Button said.

Romeo ran 16:17, six seconds behind F-M’s McGurrin.

“He’s been our sixth or seventh guy,” Button said. “If he ran that at SPAC, it would’ve almost gotten him to the state meet a year ago.

“This gives us a ton of confidence. We’re off next week, then we have our meet, and while most of the teams will be going to the city [for the Manhattan Invitational], Arlington will be coming to our meet, so that’ll be a big one.”

In the girls’ race, Burnt Hills, ranked second behind Queensbury in Class A, finished second to Fayetteville-Manlius, which is

No. 1 in Class AA, ahead of Saratoga Springs.

The Hornets’ Courtney Chapman won in 16:58, followed by Burnt Hills’ Sam Roecker (17:19) and Molly Pezzulo (17:28).

Meaghan Gregory was eighth for BH in 17:44, but F-M had five runners in the top nine and scored 27 points to Burnt Hills’ 61.

The Queensbury boys proved to have more depth than Arlington in Division I of the Queensbury Invy, as the Admirals’ Jared Leslie (15:53.51), John Muller and Adam Doherty went 1-2-3, but the Spartans got five runners in before another Arlington shirt showed up.

The Spartans’ Brian Gallagher was fourth (16:13.37), followed by Kevin Spargue in sixth (16:19.52), Chris Taylor in seventh (16:29.58), Pat Carroll in 10th (16:45.49) and Jon Flint in 17th (17:05.42.

In girls’ Division I, Danielle Winslow won easily in 17:54.10 for Queensbury, and Brittany Winslow (18:45.90), Morgan Mueller (19:05.02), Carlyn Wynn (19:34.17) and Katie Messina (19:54.17) were also in the top 15 to give the Spartans a 24-point victory over

Arlington.

Broadalbin-Perth, led by Andrew Goodspeed (16:51.32), outdueled Voorheesville for the Division II team title, and the Patriots’ girls’ team also won, with Gina Christaldi (fourth, 19:37.20), Opal Jessica Bogdan (20:28.37) and Emily Baker (20:32.26) each cracking the top seven overall.

Schuylerville’s Samantha Watson won the race in 19:18.89.

Scotia-Glenville swept the boys’ and girls’ Division II team titles at the Galway Invitational at Bob’s Tree Farm.

Amanda Schermerhorn (18:13) and Becky Celorio took the first two spots, respectively, for the Tartans, and Connor Maggs was Scotia’s top finisher in the boys’ race, taking second in 15:31 to 15:23 for Denis Hurley of LaSalle.

The Duanesburg girls outscored Stillwater by 18 points in Division I, as the Eagles’ Lauren McGarry won in 19:17.

Berlin’s Casey Gilbert won the boys’ Division I race, and Hawthorne Valley took the team title.

The Colonie boys and girls swept team titles at the 66th annual E.J. Hermann Invitational in Utica.

Mikala Anson (fifth, 20:42.2), Gabby Rodriguez (seventh, 20:49.5), Nayamka Roberts-Smith (eighth, 20:58.5), Jess Abrams (11th, 21:12.0) and Jessica Sherry (12th, 21:28.8) outsocred Cicero-North Syracuse, 43-50.

Niskayuna’s Chelsea Trant (20:10.7) was second in the race behind Cicero’s Taylor Wendler (19:31.7).

The Colonie boys beat Cicero, 52-62, as Tyler Stewart came in fourth (17:29.8) for the Garnet Raiders, followed by Brian Treadway in eighth (17:51.7), Pat Galdun in 10th (17:56.2), Justin Pestuglicci in 13th (18:01.1) and Erich Voelker in 17th (18:05.6).

Marshall Pagano of Niskayuna was third in 17:19.7, as Cicero’s Chris Buchanan won in 16:47.2.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons senior Jonathan Aziz won the boys’ varsity race 1 in 17:22.9, and Golden Knights freshman Taylor Florio was fourth in the girls’ race in 21:50.1.

The Cobleskill-Richmondville girls won the varsity Race 2 team title with 58 points to 63 for

Pulaski.

Freshman Analiese Mau was seventh (21:34.5) for the Bulldogs, and Alyssa Tusang, Leanna Gindburg, Larissa Melendez and Sandra Garcia-Fine were all in the top 15.

Cobleskill’s David Richards finished fourth in the boys’ Race 2 in 17:12.6.
