BEST BETS

Classical Music

Here are the top classical music recommendations, listed chronologically, for fall as chosen by Gazette classical music writer Geraldine Freedman:

Albany Symphony Orchestra with Peter Serkin playing Brahms at Canfield Casino, Saratoga Springs; Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Troy; and Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield, Mass. — An irresistible choice. Sept. 25 to 27.

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, Troy — A premier chamber music ensemble and one of the world’s most engaging soloists. Oct. 15

East Village Opera Company at Proctors, Schenectady — Open the ears to another generation's take on classical opera arias that may spellbind or shock. Oct. 17.

Stephen Hough (Nov. 9) and Emanuel Ax with Yefim Bronfman (Nov. 18) at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall — It might be overload, but how can anyone pass up a chance to hear three of the greatest pianists on the world's stages and all within one week of each other?

Violinist Christian Tetzlaff at Union College's Memorial Chapel — Tetzlaff and Bach: a magic combination. Dec. 5.
