— A man is recovering after being struck by a train Sunday afternoon near the Port of Albany.

Police said the accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. when the man was struck by a Canadian Pacific train near the port. The man was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital. His condition or identity was not available from authorities.

Canadian Pacific spokesman Jeff Johnson said all warning devices were active and it appears the man ignored them. Rail officials are working with local authorities on the ongoing investigation.

“It’s unfortunate, but it does show the importance of the warning devices and that the public does have to adhere to them,” he said.

Sources told CBS 6, the news-gathering partner of The Daily Gazette, that the man is 51 years old. They said he climbed onto a coupling after his friend told him not to just before the train started moving. The train then began to move and he fell and the train ran over his leg.

On April 17, 2006, Moreau resident Jessie J. McDonald, then 13, was struck by a northbound Amtrak passenger train in Gansevoort when he was attempting to cross the tracks. He suffered multiple injuries including a severed spinal cord that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
