SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Linton High School graduate Pat Riley, who won five NBA championships as a coach and one as a player, was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame today.
Riley, a high school and college All-American, ranks third on the all-time NBA list for coaching victories behind Lenny Wilkens and Don Nelson. He coached the "Showtime" Los Angeles Lakers to four NBA titles in the 1980's and won another title in 2006 as coach of the Miami Heat.
At a morning press conference, Riley acknowledged the influence Schenectady had on his career and said he was expecting a busload of friends from his old neighborhood to attend the ceremonies at the Hall of Fame.
"All the people that are coming have shared something great with [wife] Chris and I and my family," Riley said. "I grew up with them, that's my taproot. They're going to bust my chops, big-time, at the party after, but I love them dearly, and Schenectady, New York, is where it's all about for me."
Former Lakers greats Jerry West and Magic Johnson are scheduled to be co-presenters for Riley at the formal enshrinement tonight.
