Section II teams took third in both the boys’ and girls’ Eastern States championship races at the Manhattan Invitational on Saturday, as Shenendehowa lost to Don Bosco Prep and Danbury (Conn.), and the Queensbury girls edged out Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in another chapter in that fierce rivalry.

The Plainsmen, ranked No. 7 in the country on the Harrier Super 25, had looked forward to some ferocious competition, and got it.

Senior Alex Leuchanka (12:47.36) and junior Dan Harris (12:49.41) finished 12th and 14th, respectively, behind winner Joe Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro (N.J.), who finished the 2.5-mile Van Cortlandt Park course in 12:19.99.

Mike Danaher (13:04.50) was 26th for Shen, and Brian Trainor (13:09.58) and Jamie Glover (13:44.08) also scored.

Queensbury, led by Brian Gallagher (13:08.51) in 30th, finished 11th in the team standings. The Spartans’ top five also included Chris Taylor (13:30.81), Kevin Sprague (13:33.66), Pat Carroll (13:40.72) and Jon Flint (13:41.65).

Section II placed four teams in the top eight in the girls’ Eastern States championship, as Queensbury beat Burnt Hills by 13 points for third place, Saratoga was sixth and Shenendehowa finished eighth.

Queensbury sophomore Danielle Winslow (14:17.06) was third behind Melanie Thompson of Voorhees (14:12.79) and Courtney Chapman of Fayetteville-Manlius, the top-ranked team in the country. F-M had little difficulty winning the team title, with 55 points to 112 for Tatnall and 155 for Queensbury.

Section II blanketed the top 75 with 23 runners, including Winslow, Shen’s Lizzie Predmore in fifth (14:29.17) and Burnt Hills’ Sam Roecker in ninth (14:39.44).

Saratoga’s top runner was sophomore Sydney King in 28th (15:04.87).

Shenendehowa actually tied Midlothian for seventh with 194 points, but was placed eighth after matching the sixth runner for each team.

In other boys’ team results, Saratoga was third in the Varsity A race, Scotia-Glenville was 17th and Albany Academy 22nd; Niskayuna took fifth in the C race; Colonie was fifth in Varsity F, Schenectady was 24th, LaSalle was 25th and Amsterdam 32nd; and Shaker was ninth in the G race, followed by Guilderland (20th), Averill Park (21st) and Columbia (23rd).

Sam Place led Saratoga with a sixth place in 13:14.50, and teammates Demetri Goutos (13:23.88), Kyle Wegner (13:49.53) and Joe Fairley (13:53.16) also cracked the top 35.

Tyler Stewart (13:27.30) was 13th in the F race for Colonie, teammate Joe Emory (13:46.60) was 27th and LaSalle’s James Doran finished 30th in 13:48.55.

Shaker’s top runners in the G race were Craig Weiss in 10th (13:13.66) and Ryan Egan (13:25.59), and Eric Young (13:55.41) also cracked 14 minutes. Kyle Gutbrodt (13:51.74) and Tim Scudds (13:52.37) were first in for Averill Park, but Guilderland, led by Caleb Doak and Chris Cure, had a tighter pack to edge the Warriors by 11 points in the standings.

The Guilderland girls finished third in the Varsity B race, as Kelly Camardo (16:00.60), Bridget Daley (16:11.49), Lynley Joynt, Lea Cure and Michelle Fish all finished in the top 50; Shaker was fourth and Holy Names sixth in the D race; Colonie took fourth in Varsity E; and Niskayuna was fifth in the F race, two points behind West Islip.

Arlington was a no-show, so the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys coasted to a 46-point victory over Monroe-Woodbury at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Scott Maughan (15:28.4), Otis Ubriaco (15:30.9) and Kent Harlow (15:35.1) took the top three spots in Division III for the Spartans, Sean Pezzulo (15:54.8) was seventh and Anthony Romeo (16:31.3) completed the scoring.

Jamesville-Dewitt was nine points behind Monroe-Woodbury.

“It was not quite the meet we expected,” Burnt Hills coach Chip Button said. “Up front, our first three guys ran great. Scott and Otis ran together the whole way, pushing each other, and Kent was closing really well on those two. We ran well, but I was hoping to see how we matched up against that really good team.”

In Division II, Andrew Goodspeed was third behind Lansingburgh’s Alney Tobias (15:50.5) to lead Broadalbin-Perth to victory, and Conor Cashin led Voorheesville to the Division I team title.

The Greenwich girls, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class D, outdueld Canadaigua Academy to win Division III by 18 points.
