SCHENECTADY For the first time since Oct. 24, 1980, the Union College field hockey team defeated perennial national power William Smith, 3-0, Friday at Frank Bailey Field.
The 2-2, 8-3 Herons were ranked 16th in the country. Union, 2-2 in the Liberty League and 7-2 overall, ended a 24-game losing streak against the Herons.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Powers, junior midfielder Molly Osborn and senior midfielder Anne Hanson scored for Union, which outshot the Herons, 19-5. Goalie Liz Stanford made two saves.

STONY BROOK — Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded 16 kills and 10 digs to lead the Great Danes to a 25-17,
25-22, 25-27, 25-21 victory over Stony Brook in an America East Conference match.
Senior middle blocker Hillary White added 14 kills, and Kamisha Kellam chipped in with 11 for the 3-0, 10-8 Great Danes. Stony Brook fell to 0-2 and 9-11.
