HAGAMAN Amid its campaign to reach city residents, the Amsterdam Family YMCA has hired a new director to lead the organization into the future.
Nancy Carr, 46, of Perth, was hired last month and has spent four days as the branch’s director but already has a 30-, 60- and 90-day plan in mind for the future of the YMCA.
Former director Peter Pink retired in January but stayed as interim director until his replacement could be hired.
The part-time position is perfect for Carr, whose 4-year-old son Robert just began preschool at Broadalbin-Perth.
Carr and her husband Robert moved to Perth four years ago from New Jersey where she worked for Dun and Bradstreet, a company that provides credit reports for other businesses.
“I have over 20 years of experience in leadership and marketing in the corporate world,” Carr said.
Upon moving to Perth, she became a stay-at-home mom, which allowed her time to get involved with nonprofit organizations. She serves on the board of directors of the Adirondack Speculator Region Chamber of Commerce and as a board member for the Moms’ Club of Fulton County.
“That’s how I really became comfortable with the area, through meeting people and setting up play dates with my son,” Carr said.
Carr said her goal is to “reinvigorate” the Y.
“I want to make it run professional and do what our members need from us,” Carr said.
Carr said she intends to start with the small stuff, including instituting a photo identification card system to distinguish the staff from parents and members.
“There are a ton of little things like that that I can do,” Carr said.
Carr also plans to go into the community and find more corporate sponsors to support the YMCA, which just received a $5,000 donation from KeyBank for its day care program.
After moving from its site in Amsterdam, where the Y was located for 150 years, to a site in Hagaman in 2002, the Y’s board of trustees and staff are trying to reconnect with its root clientele in the city by expanding and possibly moving its day care facility into the old Bacon School in Amsterdam.
“There are things we desperately need for the day care,” Carr said. “We have a great new day care director. Her heart’s in the right place and now she needs the support.”
The Amsterdam Family YMCA has a membership of between 300 and 350, which includes family memberships.
“We’re a small Y with small business challenges,” Carr said. “At a time when the Y is looking to move and expand, it’s exciting to be part of this up and coming movement.”

this new director has a professional attitude...does this mean that the YMCA has been run so terrible in the past ?? albeit that it moved far away from the city (its roots) and raised fees as did fulton county YMCA what do these people expect?? a lot of kids come from single parent homes or both parents work which makes it impossible for them to attend on their own let alone the new fees cost...maybe the Y's should have a shuttle for them...anyway looks like the YMCA's are becomming a country club atmostphere where money talks and the other don't....already one program is leaving the Hagaman facility and moving back to the city because they are quoted as saying they are out of touch being so far out......
