— Staff members at the Walter Elwood Museum have begun looking for a new home for the museum’s collections.

Jacki Meola, president of the museum’s Board of Trustees, said board members and staff visited on Tuesday with state officials to tour Guy Park Manor as a possible site for the museum. Guy Park Manor is owned by the state and had been rented out until recently.

“The first couple weeks we were standing there with our mouths open saying ‘what happened?’ Now we have to look at our options, you can’t have all your eggs in one basket,” Meola said. She was referring to the decision by the Greater Amsterdam School District Board of Education to close the building at 300 Guy Park Ave., which currently houses the museum collection.

The school board’s decision came after the museum director pointed out problems with the building, including the presence of bats that might pose a health hazard.

The museum’s goal is to make the collection accessible to the public any way possible, and Meola said she doesn’t think the school district is moving in that direction.

The school board voted to close the building in August and in September voted to seek proposals from realty agents to sell the building.

Superintendent of Schools Thomas Perillo said the district isn’t finished collecting those proposals and may have a formal presentation by realty agents at the next school board meeting.

Meola said it would be expensive for the museum to move the collections properly. She said museum officials intend to kick off a campaign to raise funds to cover the expenses that will result from the closing of the building.

“Even if everyone in Amsterdam came an rolled up their sleeves there would still be expenses,” Meola said.
