— A Schenectady man convicted last month in a fatal September 2007 shooting was sentenced this morning to up to three years in state prison on unrelated charges of attempted assault and child endangerment.

Craig Thompson, 22, of Congress Street, pleaded guilty in September to those charges in return for a sentence of one to three years in state prison.

Thompson was convicted last month of second-degree murder and other charges in the Sept. 13, 2007, shooting death of Hassan Rainey at Craig Street and Duane Avenue. Sentencing in that case is scheduled for Dec. 18. He faces up to 25 years to life on the murder charge.

The attempted assault and child endangerment charges stemmed from allegations Thompson beat a man with a handgun and raped a minor in separate incidents in January. Thompson wasn't charged with the killing until late February.

In the assault case, Thompson was accused of getting into a fight with another man at State and Hulett streets Jan. 25. The man required stitches and was diagnosed with an orbital fracture.

In the rape case, Thompson was accused of having sex with a girl under the age of 17 at Yates Village in what prosecutors called a statutory rape case.

At this morning's sentence, acting Schenectady County Court Judge Richard Sise noted the lengthy prison term Thompson faces in the unrelated case. Sise urged Thompson to get his GED and take advantage of programs, saying that some day he will return to society.

"You can choose to make that productive time, however long that might be," Sise said.
