Area Colleges: Saint Rose women's soccer team knocks out Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. — Freshmen Christina Cuffari and Gianna D’Errico each scored a goal in the first 10 minutes of play as The College of Saint Rose women’s soccer team Golden Knights earned a spot in the NCAA Division II East Regional championship with a 4-0 victory over Franklin Pierce Sunday.

In beating nemesis Franklin Pierce in the NCAA tournament for the first time ever, the Golden Knights improved to 18-3-2.

“We never take anything for granted when we play them,” said Saint Rose coach Laurie Darling Guthiel. “Our focus today was to play as a team because we knew that it was going to take contributions from everybody in order to win.”

Jazmine Farrell assisted on second-half goals by Amanda Schweers and Kailey Egbert for the Knights, who will face Bridgeport (18-4-1) Friday. The East Regional championships will be hosted by the highest remaining seed from the Atlantic Region.

SCHENECTADY — Jill Vandegrift scored the game-winning goal at 15:05 of the third period as the Engineers swept a weekend ECAC series with the Dutchwomen.

Vandegrift scored both of RPI’s goals on power plays as the Engineers improved to 4-1-1 in the league and 7-5-1 overall.

Sophomore Callee Heywood scored her first career goal for the Dutchwomen (0-6-0, 0-13-1).

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Lauren Revesz and Dana Brown combined for 48 points, leading the Golden Knights past Lincoln in the championship game of the James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament.

Revesz had 27 points to lead the Knights (2-0), and Brown, the tournament MVP, added 21.

Saint Rose outscored Lincoln

(1-1), 41-18, in the final 17 minutes of the first half to take a 43-27 lead.

AMHERST, Mass. — Senior Whitney Coleman scored 16 points and earned all-tournament honors as the Red Hawks defeated New York City College of Technology in the consolation game of the Amherst Tip-Off Tournament.

Freshman Laura Easterling chipped in with 11 points for the Red Hawks, who opened the game with a 37-1 run.

Danes triumph

ALBANY — The University at Albany became just the third America East team to record an undefeated conference season by defeating Stony Btook, 27-25,

25-20, 25-9.

Kamisha Kellam had a team-high 17 kills, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Great Danes (20-8, 12-0 AE) won their 14th straight match. As the top seed, the Great Danes will host the conference tournament, which begins Friday.

McCurty hits milestone

LOUDONVILLE — Burgandy McCurty finished with 22 kills to go over the 500 mark for the season as Siena ended its regular season with a 25-23, 27-25, 30-28 victory over Saint Peter’s.

McCutry became just the second player in school history to pass the 500 kills mark, and needs 13 to break the single-season record.

The Saints (18-12, 15-2 Metro Atlantic Conference) are the No. 2 seed for the league tournament, which they will host on Sunday. They will face Canisius in the semifinals.
