— An estranged boyfriend was charged with a felony after he threatened to burn himself to death in front of his former girlfriend Thursday night, city police said.

Andre D. Muse, 23, who told police he is homeless, went to his former girlfriend’s residence at 1579 Carrie St. at 11:30 p.m. in violation of an order of protection, said Lt. Brian Kilcullen.

“It was a domestic incident. He showed up and doused himself with lighter fluid and threatened to light himself on fire,” Kilcullen said. “He appears to have some emotional issues.”

An unidentified person called police, who arrived within two minutes, Kilcullen said.

Muse allegedly ran from police and broke his leg in several places, including a compound fracture, while jumping a fence, Kilcullen said.

Muse was taken to Ellis Hospital, where he was arraigned and where he remains.

Police charged Muse with first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, for violating an October 2007 order of protection. They also charged him with four counts of reckless endangerment. The charges represent the potential danger he allegedly posed to his former girlfriend and to three children inside the residence by threatening to light himself on fire, Kilcullen said. Kilcullen said Muse is the father of one of the children.

Muse was charged with second-degree criminal contempt in September 2007, Kilcullen said.
