Rasta Thomas of Lar Lubovitch Dance Company will be at Jacob's Pillow in Becket, Mass. July 2-6.
Here are the top dance recommendations, listed chronologically, for summer as chosen by Gazette dance writer Wendy Liberatore:
- Lar Lubovitch Dance Company at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Becket, Mass. — American dance maker Lar Lubovitch is celebrating his company’s 40th anniversary season with a mix of old and new works and some fantastic guest artists including Rasta Thomas and Alessandra Ferri. July 2 to 6.
- Mark Morris Dance Group in “Romeo and Juliet” at the Fisher Center for the Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson — Choreographer Mark Morris got his hands on Prokofiev’s original score. He refashioned the ballet as the composer envisioned it, but with the trademark Morris twist. July 4 to 9.
- New York City Ballet in Jerome Robbins ballets at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs — This summer, New York City Ballet will honor the people’s choreographer Jerome Robbins. Not all of his dances are masterpieces. But look out for “Afternoon of a Faun,” “Glass Pieces,” “The Concert,” “Opus 19/The Dreamer,” “West Side Story Suite” and “The Four Seasons.” They are among some of his best crafted and most personable. July 8 to 26.
- Parsons Dance Company at PS/21, Chatham — One of America’s most likable modern dance ensembles will return to the outdoor venue. As usual, the Parsons company promises jaw-dropping moves combined with heart-pumping pop music. July 11 and 12.
- David Michalek’s “Slow Dancing” at Jacob’s Pillow, Becket, Mass. — This is more a living art exhibition than a dance concert. Photographer/videographer David Michalek points his camera at dancers, capturing every flex of their flesh and muscle. It’s fascinating. July 31 to Aug. 3.
