— Talk of a promotion at her corporate job made Rachel St. Martin realize that she really wanted to sell her own gourmet cupcakes for a living.

St. Martin, 28, was working remotely from her Porter Corners home in health care public relations when her New York City company offered to give her a boost.

“I realized, speaking to them, that it wasn’t the ladder I wanted to climb,” she said.

She really wanted to build on a little side business she started for friends who wanted to impress their beaus with a homemade treat on Valentine’s Day.

“It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do as my primary job,” said St. Martin, who quit her corporate job about two months ago to start her business.

Now, she plans to open Spa City Cupcakes on June 1 in the lower level of the Downstreet Marketplace at 454 Broadway.

The shop will be the first in the city to capitalize on a cupcake shop trend that started several years ago and catapulted into the limelight thanks to a cupcake-munching appearance on “Sex and the City.” In addition to the individual cakes, Spa City Cupcakes will sell coffee and tea so people can take a break with their sweets at tables in the hallway.

“They’re so special and unique, and there’s something about a cupcake that brings you back to childhood,” St. Martin said.

Key lime, peanut butter cup, caramel apple and Fluffernutter will join traditional flavors like vanilla, chocolate and red velvet on her constantly changing menu.

The Pittsburgh native also will sell a “gob” cupcake inspired by the icing-filled chocolate sandwich cookies that are called whoopie pies outside Western Pennsylvania.

The treats will sell for between $2 and $3.50 apiece, depending on the size and type. St. Martin plans to eventually add large cupcake-style cakes and build on the flavors. She welcomes flavor ideas from customers.

People can buy a dozen or more cupcakes, or they can stop in for just one.

“My whole vision for the shop was it’s like walking into someone’s kitchen,” she said.

Spa City Cupcakes will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with extended hours in the summer.
