Alice Cooper is shown performing last Friday in Los Angeles. He will appear at Proctors on Oct. 26.
If the best Broadway has to offer doesn’t excite you, maybe musical theater is not your cup of tea. Don’t despair. Proctors’ 2008-2009 performance season has a little something for everybody,
All kinds of musical, dance and comedy acts from around the world will make up next season’s playbill along with the Broadway Series Package, highlighted by the return of “Mamma Mia!,” the winner of five 2002 Tony Awards that played to packed houses at Proctors during the 2006-2007 season.
“We like to say around here that it’s the mix that’s important,” said Proctors CEO Philip Morris. “We have great musical theater, we have rock, country and classical music, we have new work, we have old work. We try to make sure we get a little bit of everything and I think we did.”

Along with “Mamma Mia!” from Oct. 28-Nov. 2, the Proctors’ Broadway package includes “Legally Blonde the Musical,” “Avenue Q,” “Happy Days — A New Musical,” “Rat Pack: Live at the Sands,” and “Sweeney Todd.” Two of those productions, “Rat Pack” and “Happy Days” aren’t technically Broadway shows, at least not yet.
“The ‘Rat Pack’ is originally a British show that I saw out in Las Vegas and it was incredible,” said Morris, “and ‘Happy Days’ is definitely heading for Broadway. It’s playing at the Goodspeed theater in Chester, Connecticut, and that’s the first place they send shows that they intend to do on Broadway. That’s where ‘A Chorus Line’ got its start. Technically, ‘Rat Pack’ and ‘Happy Days’ may not be Broadway shows, but they’re definitely of that caliber.”
Also on the schedule for 2008-2009 are a series of interactive productions, including the return of “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” to the GE Theatre Jan. 13-18. While that show invites audience members to participate in a wedding celebration, “Late Night Catechism,” another interactive show scheduled for the GE Theatre March 3-8, puts the audience in a parochial school classroom and subjects them to a surprise quiz.
Rock singer Alice Cooper and country music legend Kenny Rogers are among the musical performers on tap, while for classical music lovers, the Dublin Philharmonic and The 5 Browns will be in town for one-night stands.
Late-night television host Craig Ferguson and political humorist Mark Russell are among the comedy acts on the schedule, while two area groups, Stageworks/Hudson and the Lake George Opera will also offer their own productions for Proctors’ audiences.
