— Tom Mailey, a 20-year veteran at CBS 6, will leave the Niskayuna-based television station at the end of the month.

Mailey has accepted a position as marketing manager for Stewart’s Shops in Saratoga Springs.

“It has been a pleasure helping our viewers get ready for the work and school day ahead, and, I hope, put a smile on their faces,” Mailey said in a news release issued by WRGB Television. “It took a tremendous opportunity for me to decide to leave CBS 6, and the chance to manage the marketing department at the corporate headquarters of the employee- and family-owned Stewart’s Shops in Saratoga Springs is that opportunity.”

Mailey joined CBS 6 in 1988 as host of “The Big Money Movie” and later moved into the newsroom as a reporter. He has been delivering morning forecasts for the Capital Region for the last 12 years; as a meteorologist teamed with newscaster Ed O’Brien, Mailey helped CBS 6 become a consistent ratings winner in the morning news slot.

In January 2005, Mailey began a part-time, $40,000 job as Schenectady County’s special events coordinator. He left the job a year later, amid criticism of his performance as lackluster.

With Mailey’s departure, the CBS 6 morning news product will look much different by fall. O’Brien announced in March he will leave the station this summer.
