MECHANICVILLE New charges have been filed in Mechanicville against the former Saratoga Springs school bus driver and his roommate who are accused of sexually abusing several boys.
Douglas Conrad, 35, of 151 Jefferson St., Saratoga Springs, was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. Mechanicville police said they have evidence that Conrad sexually abused a 12-year-old boy in 2007 while Conrad was living in an apartment in the city on Frances Street.
James Wiley, 60, also of 151 Jefferson St., was Conrad’s roommate at the time and was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
Police Chief Joseph Waldron wouldn’t say what kind of evidence police had but said it wasn’t limited to statements from victims or witnesses.
“We’re continuing to follow other leads,” he said. “We’re still questioning people to this day, even [on possible incidents] as far back as 2002.”
Conrad is currently free on bail. He is to appear on Wednesday morning in City Court to face the new charges.
“We would rather a warrant be issued and we’d rather go and arrest him, but that’s not our call,” Waldron said. “The call is the judge’s call, and I have to respect his decision.”
“He’s already out on bail in the case in Saratoga Springs,” Judge James Hughes said. “If it was something that had happened between his being picked up in Saratoga Springs and today, then the decision would have been much different.”
Wiley is also scheduled to appear in city court on Wednesday on the new charge.
He was also charged on Feb. 15 with felony criminal sexual act in Saratoga Springs .
Conrad was arrested last month in Saratoga Springs on four misdemeanor counts of forcible touching. At that time, police said that he inappropriately touched two 14-year-old boys in 2007.
According to police, Conrad touched the genitals and buttocks of the two boys in his apartment in Saratoga Springs.
Conrad was charged with two more misdemeanors Feb. 28 after police said they found a third victim.
Those abuses occurred with a 12-year-old boy in the parking lot of Conrad’s apartment building and on Christmas Eve in a home, according to police.
Conrad was suspended with pay after the first charges were lodged Feb. 13, and resigned as a school bus driver on Feb. 28 after the second set of charges were filed.
District Attorney James A. Murphy III said Wiley and Conrad are cousins and that the mother of one of the alleged victimsis related to Conrad.
