Before his accident on Oct. 13, 1983, John Sowa, then a 49-year-old organic chemistry professor at Union College, memorized the first and last names of all 300 of his students within the first two weeks of classes. He also ran 60 miles a week and bicycled between 20 and 50 miles a week....
