Convicted murderer Omari Lee, 26, right, confers with his attorney Mark Sacco at his sentencing on Wednesday.
SCHENECTADY The man convicted of shooting a former Schenectady High School basketball player to death was sentenced today to 70 years to life in prison.
Omari Lee, 27, was found guilty in May of second-degree murder and weapons possession charges in the slaying of Xavier McDaniel. Lee shot McDaniel on April 3, 2007, outside Jerry Burrell Park because he falsely believed McDaniel had stolen crack cocaine, cash and a gun.
He was sentenced by acting Schenectady County Judge Polly Hoye to 25 years to life in state prison on the murder conviction. He also received 15-year sentences on each of four weapons charges, with three of those to be served consecutive to the murder charge.
McDaniel's family, including his 2-year-old son, were in the courtroom for Lee's sentencing.
"Human decency didn't have any effect on Omari Lee," said prosecutor Philip Mueller. "He shot [McDaniel] in cold blood, at close range, in broad daylight, while he was trapped in his own vehicle."
