Family members said Lynn Anderson, 10, was the most seriously injured of six children and their mother who were hit by a pickup truck Wednesday night as they were crossing State Street in Schenectady.
SCHENECTADY One of the two children airlifted to Albany Medical Center after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing State Street remains in a coma after overnight surgery, her grandmother said today.
Five siblings and their mother were injured, but Lynn Anderson, 10, appeared to sustain the worst injuries in the accident, said her grandmother, Elizabeth Speanburg. Speanburg said she and other relatives stayed at Albany Medical Center until the surgery was completed.
“My God, she’s only 10,” Speanburg said. “It’s terrible, I can’t believe this happened.”
The Vale neighborhood family was injured at about 6 p.m. when a Chevrolet 1500 truck hit them as they crossed State Street near Chestnut Street.
Police today identified the driver of the pickup as Joel M. Eddy of Saratoga County. They said Eddy was not injured and that no charges are expected to be filed today, with the investigation possibly concluded by Friday.
Lynn and her 2-year-old brother, Charles, were taken to Albany Medical Center, Charles with a concussion, Speanburg said. Mother Sherry Anderson was also being treated at Albany Medical Center for a concussion. Lynn remains in critical condition, while Charles and Sherry are each listed in serious condition.
The four other children were taken to Ellis Hospital. Lynn’s twin sister, Susan, suffered broken legs, while Elizabeth, 11, suffered bruises, 6-year-old Isaiah a concussion and 15-year-old Sapeca bruises. Speanburg expected some of the children to be released from the hospital this afternoon.
Another sibling, 14-year-old Angela, was with her grandmother at the time.
Sherry Anderson is a housewife and her husband, Edward, is a contractor, Speanburg said. The couple has been married 19 years.
“It’s tough on him,” Speanburg said of Edward Anderson. “He doesn’t know which way to go.”

I am so relieved to hear the children are doing well, I am praying for the ten year old. We were first on the scene last night and saw the children in the street it was awful!! We didnt think the ten yr old would make it and I am so happy to hear she still has a chance.
