Emergency personnel tend to pedestrians struck by a pickup truck as they were crossing State Street in Schenectady on Wednesday.
SCHENECTADY Six children and their mother were injured Wednesday evening when they were hit by a truck while crossing State Street.
Police department spokesman Officer Kevin Green said the mother and her children were crossing near Chestnut Street just after 6 p.m. when they were struck by a Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck that was heading downtown.
The children were as young as 2 years old, but police did not know all of their ages. Scanner traffic reported one as 6 years old and another as 11. Green said two of the younger children were airlifted to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where they remained in critical condition late Wednesday.
The four other children were transported by ambulance to Ellis Hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The mother was also taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital with the more seriously injured children.
Police had not released the names of the victims or the driver late Wednesday.
The Daily Gazette’s news-gathering partner, CBS 6, reported that police questioned the driver of the truck and he was released. A witness also told CBS 6 that the mother was pushing her children in a shopping cart with the youngest in a stroller when the accident happened.
Police blocked off State Street from Hulett Street to Catherine Street as Mohawk Ambulance and Schenectady Fire Department personnel tended to the injured. A purple stroller, two pairs of sneakers and a shopping cart lay in the street.
Crime scene investigators worked late Wednesday to reconstruct the accident. They took measurements, made chalk markings on the pavement to indicate locations and marked evidence in the street with numbered tags. Twenty distinct tags could be seen.
The accident is still under investigation, Green said: “I don’t know how it happened.”

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family of 7 and to the driver and his family.
Is there a crosswalk there?

well if your familiar with state and hullett you will know there is no crosswalk there either and the light is set back from the corner by about 25 ft. ppl come around that hullet st corner so fast sometimes im surprised noone has been hit there, as well as moyston st crossing over state st on to hullett there is no light at all so you have about a 50 square ft area thats very dangerous. I saw that scene and there were 6 childern an adult a stroller and a shopping cart. this mother needed grocries for her children so she dressed them and took them to the store instead of leaving them alone and she should be locked up? I dont care if that man was bone sober! How did he not see 7 people?!? he should be locked up not her I live on eagle st I drive that route everyday and ive never come close to hitting anyone . I am praying for that family!

I am the father of the children that were in that accident. I want to thank the Schenectady PD and Mohawk Ambulence for the quick response and great care they gave my family. Thank you to all of the people who have expressed concern, we appreciate all of your prayers.
That was my first day back to work in two and a half weeks after caring for my wife and children when she suffered a life threatening drug intraction when her doctor messed up her perscription.

ok attack me im sure millions of kids are reading the paper right now and since children are reading how do you think they would feel about you saying a mother should go to jail have her kids taken after being mowed down by some loser who was probably looking for a cd instead of watching the road? there are lights on each side of the intersection but no crosswalk like i said. smh ...Mr Anderson I am the sister of the two girls who brought the coats and things for the children...Our thoughts and prayers are with you and if I know my sisters you will be seeing us again...God Bless

I too have to avoid people who walk in front of my truck when I drive on State St. every day. They think that they can walk anywhere they want and i'm the one that has to stop for them. Maybe if the police start giving them tickets things will change. Im sorry about your kids and the investigation will decide who was at fault. I think it was both the mother and the driver.

Our prayers are with you, this is an unbelievable tragedy, I can't even imagine how difficult this must be for the family. My daughter is best friends with your girls and we wish them a 100% recovery, I don't understand how the driver didn't see 7 people crossing the street, but only God Knows and can judge. We will continue praying until all the members of your family are safe at home. GET WELL VERY SOON WE LOVE YOU!!!!!
