— The city’s only Reformed church will be closing its doors for good, after 150 years of service in the community.

The Rev. Charles Hesselink, who led the congregation at the First Reformed Church on the city’s South Side, said over the years the congregation has dwindled gradually until now when there are fewer than 10 active members, who decided their efforts would be better spent connecting with another congregation.

“The congregation in the Reformed Church has more say about whether the church stays open or not,” Hesselink said. “They maintained the congregation until they felt it wasn’t productive anymore.”

The remaining members of the congregation will join the Florida Reformed Church in Minaville. Hesselink said the two congregations have had a close relationship over the years. During summer months, the two congregations meet for one month in Florida and the other in Amsterdam.

Hesselink said the city church at Center and Arch streets is in “good repair.”

“It’s a beautiful building inside, all wonderfully wainscoted and we have a well maintained old pipe organ,” Hesselink said.

He said that the congregation currently has a contract to sell the building to a local individual who plans to use it for community outreach services and programs for youth and families.

The reason for the dwindling attendance over the years is unknown. Hesselink said he doesn’t think it can be tied to one thing, but a combination of factors, including changing demographics, a building with little or no parking and a community that may not relate to the church’s style of worship.

As for Hesselink, he said he’ll be spending more time with his wife. At 71, he said, he has retired several times and remains semi-retired. He doesn’t think he’ll take on another congregation, but will continue his work with Hospice in Saratoga.

The First Reformed Church will host its final worship service at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. There will be a special closing ceremony at the church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6.
