SARATOGA COUNTY Saratoga County could host regional and national horse events at an arena holding up to 6,000 spectators if the findings in a feasibility study for a horse park become a reality.
The owner of a Minnesota consulting firm this week released a sketch of the first phase of the state-funded feasibility study.
Rod Markin, president of Markin Consulting of Maple Grove, Minn., said his company began its work in May and hopes to complete the report by the end of November.
The preliminary report says minimum facility needs would include an indoor arena with seating for up to 6,000 as well as two outdoor, covered arenas. Also, the study called for five to seven outdoor rings, warm-up and schooling areas, show offices, 600 permanent stalls and 400 temporary horse stalls and a sales area.
The cost of such a facility, expected to be in the millions, will be discussed in the second phase of the study, according to Markin.
“We have no idea which town would be the final pick for the facility,” he said. “We’re looking at a variety of sites.”
A map of the county with stars next to potential sites includes spots in Moreau, Saratoga Springs, Milton, Ballston, and on the Northumberland and Saratoga border as well as the Charlton and Galway border.
Charlton Supervisor Alan Grattidge he’s enthusiastic about the idea of a horse park and arena somewhere in Saratoga County.
“It could enhance Saratoga County’s stand as a destination for horse-related activities,” he said. “It would really extend our season from the summer [at Saratoga Race Course] while providing open space and a rural atmosphere emphasizing our equine industry.”
The state provided $90,000 to pay for the study.
Grattidge said the county will look for financial help from the state again if it is determined a horse park should be built.
The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors appointed the county Cornell Cooperative Extension office to oversee the horse park study.
Supervisors have made no commitment to build the park, but said if they decide to go further after the study, they will ask state lawmakers to assist with the cost.
New York doesn’t currently have a multiuse horse show park and event site for riding and competition like the existing parks in Florida, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky and other states.
The closest facilities that hold events include the state fairgrounds in Syracuse and the Eastern State Exposition grounds in West Springfield, Mass.
Markin said his firm specializes in equestrian facilities and previously worked on projects including the Florida Horse Park. It recently completed a similar horse park feasibility study for the Seattle area.
A company Web site is expected today to post specifics about the Saratoga County plan. The site is www.markinconsulting.com/saratoga.htm.
