Schenectady High added to state list of dangerous schools

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady High School has been added to the state Education Department's list of persistently dangerous schools, the state agency announced today.

The school is one of eight added to the annual list, which includes a total of 19 schools, but one of only three schools on the list from outside New York City.

Schools are considered persistently dangerous when they have had at least six violent incidents per 100 students enrolled — with each incident weighted for severity — for at least two consecutive school years. Serious incidents include homicides, sex offenses, robberies, reckless endangerment, arson and possession or threatened use weapons.

Schools on the list must offer parents the right to transfer their children to safer schools in the district and will have to submit plans for reducing violence to the state.

The Berkshire Farm school - a Columbia County facility for troubled youths - remains on the list from the 2007-08 school year.
