GLOVERSVILLE Foothills United Methodist Church has a firm $1 million offer for the corner parcel that adjoins the new church property at Route 30A and Kingsboro Avenue, its pastor said Thursday.
The Rev. Wayne E. Jones said the buyer is a developer who has not conveyed to church officials the project plans for the site.
City officials said Thursday they are also unaware of what sort of business will be proposed for the site.
But, based on the offer, the Common Council agreed Tuesday to rezone the property from residential to commercial so that the deal can be completed. A formal vote on the zoning will be conducted at the Council’s Aug. 26 meeting.
Jones said the $1 million will be helpful as the church proceeds with its $5 million construction project. He said construction, which began last year, was held up as the church sought to restructure its financing.
In recent weeks, he said, the church has secured a construction loan and work is expected to resume by October. Jones said he anticipates the building will be closed up by winter, allowing construction on the interior to continue unhindered by the weather.
The parcel is directly across from the proposed Wal-Mart site. The church is being built away from the road, leaving a few choice acres unused and available for sale.
With the pending sale of the corner lot and an offer on the existing Fremont Street church property, Jones said the congregation may finish its project owing as little as $500,000.
“Building our building, I personally feel God is laying things out for us,” Jones said of the turn of events.
He said he is looking forward to completion so that the congregation “can get on with the real business of the church. We’re not a one-day-a-week church,” he said, citing the many programs and functions supported at the Fremont Street building. Jones said more than 100 people show up at the church on the first Saturday of each month to pick up items in the church’s freebie program.
